Introduction
What is Anonymity & Privacy ?
"Anonymity" and "Privacy" are the most basic concepts that we will focus on throughout the course. For this reason, you should first learn what the terms "Anonymity" and "Privacy" mean exactly.
The term "privacy" describes situations where your identity is known but your activities cannot be tracked.
The concept we call "anonymity ", on the other hand, describes situations in which the activities performed are known but the identity of the person doing it is unknown.
If i explain the difference between them with a simple example from real world;
For example, when you go to a hotel, you give your identity information to the hotel when you register, but your activities in the hotel room cannot be known by the hotel, for example, what time you slept. This situation is called "privacy".
If you change your clothes from your hotel room and wear a mask and go to the lobby, this time your activities will be known by the hotel but your identity will not be known. This situation is called "anonymity ".
Usually, people's preference on the internet is to provide privacy rather than anonymity. However, unfortunately, many services offered free of charge actually violate your privacy very clearly.
You've probably heard of "If you don't pay for a product, you are probably the product.". In fact, this phrase clearly expresses the monetization structure of today's free internet services. In today's internet world, we pay with our personal informations for all kinds of quality services offered for free . Generally, service providers claim that they use the information they obtain from us only to provide us with better service. However, the areas where the information collected from us is used has more ulterior motives than innocent intentions such as increasing the quality of service.
By analyzing user data well enough, manipulations that can affect people's thoughts and decisions can be made. The best-known example of this situation is the political consultancy firm that came to the fore with the data scandal is Facebook-Cambridge Analytica. Moreover, this is not the first time and also the isn't only company doing the manipulation business "Cambridge Analytica".
In other words, when it comes to your personal data, it is wrong to think "what could they do with my data", that is, to ignore personal data security. Personal data is a very powerful weapon. By not caring your personal data security, you are handing over this dangerous weapon to people with uncertain intentions.
